HILARY MACKELDEN is a British playwright with more than 30 full length scripts to her name. Born in Coventry, she has lived all her adult life in the beautiful rural county of Sussex.
Hilary wrote her first script in 2002 when asked to provide a new version of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” for a community group at All Saints Church in Crowborough.
She followed this by two more community plays, “The Pilgrim’s Progress”, a modernised version of the classic novel by John Bunyan, and “Narnia, the Last Battle”.
Her first published play was “If We Had Only Known”, which was bought by Eldridge Publishing in 2004. In that year she also won the Sussex Playwright’s National Open Playwriting Award for “Sammy”, the story of a couple struggling to cope with a child with Prader Willi Syndrome.
In 2007, her play, ”The Price of Firewood” was entered for the Verity Bargate Award. Nina Steiger, Head of New Writing at the Soho Theatre, called the play, “well structured, politically engaging and quietly effective.”
Hilary has now written thirty two stage plays, including family friendly pantomimes, such as “The Pied Piper” and “The Three Musketeers,” and her newest, ”Blue Ridge Cinders.”
She has also created Christian plays ranging from pieces with three characters to full blown community drama, and secular scripts such as “Volunteers” and “Ashdown Lee”.
Other works include sketches and skits, and eight screenplays so far, as well as romance novels.
